About Lamu Marine National Park

Lamu Marine National Park is located in the Indian Ocean along the northern coast of Kenya, near the historic town of Lamu. The park comprises a diverse marine ecosystem with coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and sandy beaches that support a wide variety of marine life including dolphins, turtles, dugongs, and countless fish species. Established to conserve vital marine habitats and protect endangered species, the park spans around 65 square kilometers of protected waters. The waters here are relatively calm and clear, making them ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving among stunning coral gardens. The park also serves as a critical breeding ground for green turtles and hawksbill turtles. Beyond its ecological value, Lamu Marine National Park holds cultural significance due to its proximity to Lamu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site with rich Swahili history and architecture. Visitors are drawn to the park not only for its underwater attractions but also to experience traditional dhow sailing and coastal village life. Opportunities for kayaking, fishing under regulated conditions, and bird watching are additional activities. The park’s management focuses on sustainable tourism to balance conservation with local economic benefits. Accessibility is mainly via boat from Lamu Town, where locals provide guided tours to explore the park’s ecosystems safely and responsibly.
